Blooms Days

On June 16, located in the Cultuletras action in the Barrio de Las Letras, the Madrid-Dublin Bloomsday arrives, organized by the Soy de la Cuesta Association and Irish Tourism in Spain. This is a celebration that will take place at the same time in the Irish capital, as every year, in commemoration of the work Ulysses by James Joyce, which celebrates the centenary of its publication in 2022.

The event is part of the cultural revitalization of the areas that run between the Cuesta de Moyano and the Barrio de las Letras, as well as being one of the first of the activities of the recently created Eje Las Letras together with the recently named ‘Landscape of the Light’ UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Irishman James Joyce revolutionized the world of writing at the beginning of the 20th century with his Ulysses, considered by many to be the best novel in English of the modern era. It is a narrative game loaded with symbology, with one day, June 16 (the date on which the action of the novel takes place and on which the author met for the first time with his wife Nora Barnacle) and a city, Dublin, as protagonists. The encounters in various places and times between Leopold Bloom, Buck Mulligan, Stephen Dedalus, Molly Bloom or other characters, are represented on the same day and city during Bloomsday, a unique event in the world around a literary work, in which little seems to matter the complexity of it, but rather celebrate a written feat.

The actors Muriel Pernas, Raquel Vicente and Jonathan Mellor will tour the center of Madrid on Thursday, June 16, dressed as James Joyce, Molly Bloom (the wife of the protagonist Leopold Bloom) and Stephen Dedalus.
