The Köln Concert

The dance show The Köln Concert is a proposal made by the American creator Trajal Harrell, one of the most renowned and innovative names in new dance, coming to the Conde Duque Contemporary Culture Center between February 23 and 24.
After the pandemic, Harrel began to reflect on the dance of privacy (the one done at home, alone, just to enjoy) and on the freedom of that dance that is done with music that you are passionate about. In addition to this situation, the choreographer was also inspired by a concert given in 1975 in Cologne (Köln in German) by the American jazz musician Keith Jarrett. On that occasion, the artist had to play on a rickety and dilapidated piano, very far from his usual practice, giving his best concert of the tour, demonstrating that the power of music can do anything.

In his show, Trajal Harrell presents a clean set composed of seven stools spaced apart to make the feeling of isolation noticeable. He and the rest of the dancers wear costumes of fur, velvet and fringe, which evoke Keith Jarrett’s immersive improvisation. In this way, all the performers do an individual dance performance that mixes genres such as voguing or Noh theater.
