Picasso / Chanel

The Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum presents an exhibition that explores the relationship between two great creators of the 20th century: Pablo Picasso and Gabrielle Chanel, bringing together art and fashion in a new exhibition project.
The relationship between the two geniuses is practically unknown to the general public, but the truth is that they both worked together in two productions made by Jean Cocteau, another referent of the culture of the last century. They first coincided in the work of 1922, Antigone, when Picasso made the curtains and Coco Chanel the costumes, and two years later they came together again in Sergei Diaghilev’s ballet, The Blue Train, with Picasso‘s painting, Two women running on the beach as a backdrop and again, the wardrobe created by the great french designer.
The two met in the spring of 1917, perhaps through Cocteau himself, and Chanel subsequently maintained a good relationship with the married couple Pablo Picasso and Olga Jojlova.
The Picasso/Chanel exhibition is curated by Paula Luengo, curator and head of the museum’s Exhibition Area, and has the support of the Community of Madrid and CHANEL, as well as Telefónica/ACE, sponsors of the Picasso 1973/2023 Celebration. The exhibition brings together an exceptional selection of dresses, oil paintings, drawings and other pieces from American and European museums and collections, among which Almine and Bernard RuizPicasso, Patrimoine de CHANEL and the Musée National Picasso in Paris stand out for their generous collaboration.
